Project M Installation – The Project M Experience: Episode 2

Our Project M Installation and tour of the Four Wheel Campers factory is the subject for Episode 2 of The Project M Experience. \m/ Yeah, I know…if you’ve been following along with the latest post from Rene, you know that we’re already in Alaska. We visited Four Wheel Campers on May 31st for our Project M installation. So what have we been doing for the past couple months? Well, spoiler alert: I’ve already built out our new camper. More about that coming soon, I promise.

Meanwhile, we were flipping our rental. And there is that new podcast project I’ve taken on. This is not to make excuses for the delay in video production here.

We plan to document our entire Project M Experience, from the very beginning. And we’re all about providing our personal perspective with detailed insight. That’s why we started with the first episode: Why the Project M? Episode two is all about the installation.

Project M Installation
At the Four Wheel Campers Factory

Really, the first stage of this next journey we’re on begins with our new Project M installation. So we wanted to share our thoughts, and show how this lightweight truck topper camper is built. However, we were obviously pretty excited while touring the factory floor on the day of our install. I soon discovered that neither of us really said much about the big day. But, I did capture lots of footage. So, I’ve been thinking about how to portray the message we wanted to share.

Since The Project M Experience is about sharing our new lifestyle, I decided to include some scenes of us actually using the Project M for its intended purpose. And, that meant doing some actual camping!

First Night After Our Project M Installation

Our campers aren’t technically a plug-in camper. They’re meant to go out, in places you normally wouldn’t go out.

It’s been a long time since we’ve done any real camping. And that’s why we got the Project M. We were getting too comfortable in the fifth wheel. Our routine became pretty regular over the past few years, going to our usual seasonal destinations and settling in. Once again, it was time to shake things up. And Rene did just that with her crazy idea to winter in Alaska. I was excited to do some real camping again on the way up and back. And the Project M is letting us do just that.

Getting Back to Basics in the Project M

Driving home with our new camper, we boondocked in some spots where we never would have taken the trailer. And during our whirlwind tour north, we only got a taste of the good times to come in our simple new rig. With four wheel drive, and the camper shell weighing only 420 pounds, we can go anywhere. I plan to do a lot more of that. However, we were already paying for our rental, and summer was is passing by quick. Therefore, we needed to get to Willow pretty quickly.

The sun set at about 10:00 p.m. yesterday. And the daylight report just stated that sunset was five minutes earlier today. Yeah, we’re losing five minutes of sunshine each day! And yeah, there’s a daily sunlight report on local radio. But I digress…

Getting Back to Basics in the Project M

We did enjoy a couple nights at some pretty remote spots. In addition, we made it through Destruction Bay without any major incidents. Nothing like that trailer catastrophe that cut our last trip to Alaska short. This all too short but super sweet trip allowed us to gather our thoughts. We put some words to all that footage from our Project M installation. Spending nine days in the M gave us enough camping experience to speak truthfully about this lifestyle it is intended for. Even if it was only a taste, for now.

Our Project M Installation

It feels like everything is just simplified, but really solid.

Thoughts on Our Project M Installation

Solid is a good word for the Project M. And simple is perfect. Also, having spent just enough time in it to catch the camping bug, I’d add fun. And, after building ours out and seeing what some others have done, I’d say the Project M is also extremely flexible. It really is a blank slate you can personalize to fit your specific needs. Finally, the lightweight rig gave us the flexibility to stop and camp wherever we wanted. And, without seven tons trailing behind the truck I didn’t even get mad when Rene said to turn at the last minute.

I also moved the battery and installed a sliding shelf for the new Dometic fridge we got. And, I have some tips about the materials we used to save money on the build.

But first, we also want to share our first impressions of the Project M. So stay tuned for Episode 2! Coming soon, to…

  1. Did you guys list out the specs? I can’t seem to find that in your blog posts. I’m curious to know what options you added on when ordering the camper? Additionally, what is the weight now with the custom build?

    Thanks!

    • Good point, thanks for the reminder. We’ve. hinted at all the options we chose, but will publish our detailed specs soon. And we have not yet weighed again since the M build-out, but I doubt we added more than 400± lbs. plus 100 more or so of gear putting the entire camper at or under 1,000 lbs.
