Breakfast Ride Offers Best Biscuits, and View

Best Biscuits and Gravy on Breakfast Horse RideI might have said it before, but this time I believe I have truly found the best biscuits and gravy on the planet. I can stop looking now.

Perhaps it was the real cowboy coffee, cooked over an open fire, or the crisp rocky mountain air. Maybe it was the horse ride up the mountain, the breathtaking views, or all of the above.

But I can honestly say Carla and Paulette make the best chuck wagon team when it comes to a ranch style breakfast that would please any old cowpoke. Or workamper in this case.

Larry Vickers makes cowboy coffee on breakfast rideThe breakfast ride at Vickers Ranch happens twice a week during the summer months in Lake City, CO. And if I had my way, I’d go every time.

After a brief orientation by Jeremy the wrangler, everyone saddles up and you meander along horse trails, up the mountain on a 45-minute ride in the fresh morning air.

The horses are tame, they mind direction even from a novice, and they know the way. Through the trees, around the lakes, and up to the breakfast spot where you’ll find the Vickers waiting with hot coffee, eggs, bacon, biscuits, and gravy. Lots of gravy, with lots of tasty sausage bits. A smooth, flavorful gravy that must be tasted to be appreciated. And the biscuits! Oh, the biscuits … large, fluffy, warm and buttery. Smothered in the gravy that makes them heaven on the palate.

Speaking of heaven, I’ve heard ol’ Perk Vickers refer to their Lake City ranch as a little piece of heaven on earth. And I think he may be right. The views make you believe it is indeed God’s country, and the people are angels.

Just look at how much fun we had playing cowboys and cowgirls for the day …

The whole experience is really something to, well … experience. And the food truly is delicious. But don’t go back for seconds!

Paulette Vickers serves best biscuits and gravy on Breakfast RideIf you fill up too much, you’ll regret it when you have to get right back on your horse for the ride down the mountain. And there won’t be enough leftovers back in the rec hall fridge for me to raid at lunchtime.

Speaking of leftovers, you wanna know how I know this is gravy is so darned good? Two days later after being refrigerated and microwaved, it is just as creamy and tasty as the day it was made from scratch. Try that with a box mix! I have, and wished I hadn’t.
