My Dad says Mercer was the greatest songwriter of all time, penning countless songs for Broadway shows and movies. Mercer was also the co-founder of Capitol Records. He is buried in the Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, so this week while we were in town, we went to pay our respects to the musical legend.
The Bonaventure Cemetery was made famous in the book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (referred to as “The Book” by locals). In 1997, Clint Eastwood directed the movie version.
Our trip itinerary has included a lot of old, spooky and beautiful cemeteries, but the Bonaventure has the most magical feeling out of all of them. As you walk around the gardens and statuaries, you’d swear that a thousand ghosts were floating through trees and sitting on benches overlooking the river. It is one of the most peaceful, prettiest cemeteries we’ve ever seen.
