Continuing our Project M Review video series, we present The Project M Experience – Episode 3: First Impressions of our new truck topper from Four Wheel Campers. First impressions do matter. And we’ve been impressed ever since we first discovered the Project M. Subsequently, now that we’ve spent some time in the rig and put on plenty of miles, we’re ready to share our thoughts. In short, this new rig rocks! And we have the The Project M review video to prove it.

I hear you saying, “of course you’re gonna say that Jim.” But it’s true, the M rocks. \m/ For starters, the Project M is a well built seriously lightweight truck topper. My best first impression is how well the truck handles with our new home on back. After all, the shell only weighs 420 pounds. Yes, it weighs a lot more than that now that I’ve built it out. And yes, that video is coming. I promise.

But that’s another thing about the M that made such a good first impression with me. It really is a blank slate. You can build it out to meet your specific needs. Or you could do nothing at all and have an awesome camper shell ready to go on any quick excursion.

Another major reason the rig handles so well, is its streamline design. The low profile pop-up is a signature of all Four Wheel Campers. Not only is there virtually no wind-drag while driving, we can open the truck’s sliding back window with very little wind noise now. In addition, there is a surprising amount of headroom with the top up. And, putting up that top is quick and simple. Setting up and tearing down camp is easier than ever.

Our Project M Review In Action

We were fortunate enough to show off our new Project M at the Adventure Van Expo in Evergreen back in August, before we left Colorado. Don’t miss my live report there for Episode #304 of The RV Entrepreneur podcast. But there I digress, yet again. Four Wheel Campers invited us and another new M owner to represent at the expo. We had two totally different works in progress that perfectly showed off the Project M’s versatility. This was a DIY build crowd for sure. And we had some serious interest in what I had done.

And there you have a sneak peak at our own Project M build-out. Details to follow! The two yellow Rotopax packs mounted to the side hold two gallons of supplemental diesel each. I rigged up the white one inside as a water tank for the galley I built. Did I mention details are coming about that?

It’s…Mpressive!

See what I did there? 😉 About those first impressions…I mentioned how well the truck handles. It’s like, well, it’s like driving a truck. It’s nothing like hauling a trailer. And that’s why Rene gets to drive! She only pulled the trailer a few times over the past 16+ years on the road. And those were for very short distances. Or, around that casino parking lot one time when I tried to teach her how to tow, unhitch, and back up. That didn’t last long.

And, that is one of the main reasons we chose the Project M. It is also a key take-away from our Project M Review video. As you’ll see in our Project M review video, Rene says the M is “Fearless RVing”. What does she mean? Check out the video to hear just how fearful she may have been on a certain dirt road in the middle of Nevada. If we had been pulling the trailer, that is.

The Gist of our First Real Project M Review

If there’s one thing to take away from our Project M review it’s what Rene said: “The Project M is freedom.”

Not since our old backpacking days have we enjoyed such serious camping. Like we said in our Project M Installation video, the M is all about getting back to basics. And, basics to us means boondocking off the beaten path. It also means letting go of all the preposterous gadgetry, as Sterling Hayden put it when talking about Bankruptcy of Life.

What does a man need, really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in — and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That’s all in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention from the sheer idiocy of the charade.

And there’s another quick sneak peak. That IronMan awning is awesome and came in quite handy on our last outing in the rainy Alaskan Fall. And I was actually glad there was absolutely no cell service to boost with that weBoost Reach Overland booster. Can’t recall the last time I sat around the campsite reading. oh wait, that was just last week. So no, technically there is not internet everywhere in Alaska. And I’m okay with that.

So, Project M review? Back to basics, freedom, blank slate. Versatility, handling, and bad ass looks. \m/
