The Two Hardest RVing Questions to Answer

Full-time RVers tend to receive the most RVing questions. Many pertain to logistics, mechanics, or RV systems and repair. Some RVing questions relate to the best route to take, or where to find big rig friendly fuel. That’s best answered with Trip Wizard. But the type of RVing questions I’m referring to here is RV lifestyle questions.

As full-time RVers, we tend to get more questions about RV living. We’ve answered plenty of questions about RV maintenance and appliance repairs here in the blog over the years. But, I’m also referring to those questions we tend to get in person. Whenever new people we meet discover that we’ve been full-timing for 17+ years, there are two RVing questions we’re often asked the most. It may come as no surprise that I have a challenging time answering either of them.

RVing Questions I Find Hard to Answer

The number one question that I struggle to answer about full-time RVing is the one snowbirds tend to ask the most. We may be gathered around a campfire with friends of friends. Or, we may be meeting strangers as they join us for a soak in the tubs at Fountain of Youth

“So…” they ask. “Where are you from?

This question may be preceded by the typical, “Hi how are ya” greeting exchange. At it is most common at the longer term destination resorts or parks like FOY. And, it’s not so much an RVing question. But it is a question often asked of many RVers. And, after living on the road for so long, I find it hard to answer. And a bit fun. To avoid the long backstory, I usually just turn to Rene and say “So, where are we from?”

Rene is more polite than me. “Colorado…usually,” she may say. Or she’ll tell them we’ve been RVing for 17 years. The response to that is usually, “Wow!” But I tend to play with people a bit more.

Where are we from? I used to get sarcastic by asking in return, “Originally?” Then, I’d follow up with a smirk and sat, “The womb.” 🙂 That resulted in many a confused look. And almost as many soft punches from Rene. So now, I may answer that with, “How long ya got?” Or, I may reply with “We’re from (insert name of wherever we currently are) this week.”

Just Kidding…

As a joker, these replies to this top RVing question helps me gauge the true interest level of the person asking. It’s also a test to see how compatible we may be for a fun engaging discussion. Alas, the “Where are you from” question is usually not much more than an ice-breaker or lead in to idle chat. However, I have reasoning behind my snarky remarks. Most people think home is that place where you’re from. But I’ve always been a firm believer that “Home” is where you feel most comfortable. As a full-time RVer, that changes fairly often.

After spending that year in Alaska, I felt comfortable calling Willow home. And that’s because it is where I felt most comfortable. No, the environment may not have been very comfortable. (Remember, there’s no bad weather, only bad gear.) It’s not the place but the people that make a home feel like home to me. So, Willow Alaska certainly feels like home. One of them at least. But after only living there a year, I’ve now lost the right to say that’s where I’m from.

So, where am I from? Ask me next week. The answer may change.

Another of the Difficult to Answer RVing Questions

The second of these hard RVing questions to answer relates mostly to us working age RVers. The majority of the snowbirds and RV resort strangers I’ve mentioned are retired. Unless we’re hanging out with Xscapers, or spontaneously meeting fellow younger folks, most people we meet at RV parks are retired. Others are on vacation. Rarely is everyone in the group that forms in the hot tub still working. Except, for us that is. Because we work wherever we camp. But this question comes up as soon as someone we meet discovers that…

“So…” they ask. “What do you do?

Again, I often use this question as a wisecrack opportunity. “I make the most of life,” I may say. What? 😉 This is true. After all, I do believe every day is a great day. But people usually want do know what we do for a living. However, as an RV Entrepreneur I find this question as equally challenging to answer. Especially since explaining everything Rene and I do takes time. Describing how we manage the largest support community for Tripawds and their people gets confusing to most. Even after a lengthy explanation, some still ask, “But what do you do?”

But Seriously…

People ask. But they don’t want all the details about membership support, community management, e-commerce, automations, and hosting maintenance. Rene tends to keep it simple. “I’m a writer,” she says. But she’s so much more than that. I write too. But I also host a podcast. I provided website support to a wonderful rabbi for more than a decade. I’ve built many websites and online stores over the years. That all boils down to configurations, implementations, and troubleshooting. So, depending on what I’ve been up to lately, I may provide another vague answer: “I build stuff and break stuff.”

Trying to explain multiple revenue streams to folks who retired from a typical career path is challenging. But there are plenty of working age RVers out there. So, we wrote the book on how to earn an Income Anywhere! Honestly though, “what I do” changes on a daily basis. On some days my answer to the question is, “pull my hair out.” Not that there’s much hair there to pull. On other days, I may try to explain how I chase algorithms or battle spambots.

Regardless, one thing is certain about what we do. There are plenty of days when I’d rather just go dig a ditch. And that’s why I’m looking forward to our workamping gig next summer. I’m not excited about juggling our own endeavors while fulfilling our duties. But that’s pretty much what we’ve always done by choosing to work for ourselves. “It’s like juggling cats,” is another answer you may hear the next time someone asks me: What do you do?

So, what do YOU do?

No, really. We want to know. Got any other RVing questions we can answer? Be careful, you may be in for a long roundabout answer.

  1. Although we don’t roam quite like you do, we get similar questions. I feel that “home” is where my dogs are. And as far as what I do, well, 5 mins into any way I try to answer I get glazed eyes and regret in front of me. So now I say I “do” what I’m told to do by the person signing a paycheck. Most of the time.
