Rene’s Rant on RVing in the Age of Climate Change

Hang onto yer hats folks, this one’s a real downer about RVing in the age of climate change. I’m taking this turn because on Sunday, our friends got caught in a tornado near Santa Cruz. A tornado. At the beach. In Northern California. They escaped and were fine, thankfully. But it got me thinking …

The craziness of this latest disaster just brought home the stark reality that when you’re an RVer, you cannot take any location’s weather for granted. Wherever you roam, if you don’t stay on top of weather updates, you might be the next statistic.

RVing and Climate Change Do Not Play Nice Together

Not surprisingly, climate change has only intensified since my original Lisa Simpson-style Columbia Icefields Climate Change Reality Check in 2018. I guess that’s why I never bothered to post this update from our ride up the Icefields parkway last year. Sorry for the wind noise.

Just look at the glacial retreat on one of the most important glaciers in the west.

Helllllooooo people! The climate is wacked, and unless our government leaders don’t wake up and do something soon, living in a fiberglass box on wheels … living anywhere …. is going to become way more sketchy, unpredictable, and deadly.

Many of us have been talking screaming about climate change for decades. But only until the last couple of horrific natural disasters has major media paid attention. How much more craziness do we need before we move the needle in the right direction and away from a climate apocalypse?

If I can’t get more people to pay attention, maybe the media will. Maybe.

Ironically, the day before the Scotts Valley tornado of 2024, this CBS Saturday Morning episode aired on TV. It was hopeful to see that major media is no longer sidestepping the terrible reality of what we are facing in the coming years.

I love full-time RVing. And I’d like to keep doing it without worrying if we are going to get blown to bits by a tornado in the least likely place.

At a time when I’m more disheartened by the political climate than ever, I’ll do my best to keep screaming at so-called “leaders” about the state of our planet, and taking action on a personal level to stop the climate’s downward spiral. How about you?

  1. I can’t agree more! We do what little we can personally do like recycle but the real change has to come from governments. This year should be a big wakeup call but I’m not seeing it.

  2. Thank you for speaking out about this, Rene! I taught geology and environmental science for many years and if I accomplished anything, I hope it was impressing on at least some of the next generations the truth and urgency of this issue. We are not RVers currently but I love reading your posts and your honest, forthright approach to everything.
